BASF Sultan Miticide is a professional selective miticide containing 18.7% cyflumetofen for fast knockdown and long-lasting residual control of listed tetranychid spider mites on ornamentals, greenhouse crops, nurseries, landscapes, and interiorscapes. Its unique IRAC Group 25 beta-ketonitrile chemistry inhibits mitochondrial complex II electron transport, providing a valuable mode of action for mite resistance-management and integrated pest management programs.

Sultan provides contact activity against all life stages of listed tetranychid mites, including eggs, nymphs, and adults. Its highly focused mite activity makes it compatible with many beneficial insects and predatory mites used in IPM programs, while BASF reports excellent plant safety on a wide range of tested ornamental species. Sultan is especially valuable as a rotational miticide where populations have developed resistance to other modes of action.

Labeled Use Sites

Sultan is labeled for ornamental plants in commercial and retail nurseries, field-grown and container nurseries, forest tree and conifer nurseries or plantations, greenhouses, shadehouses, lathhouses, interiorscapes, industrial landscapes, commercial landscapes, residential landscapes, and commercial, public, and recreational gardens. Labeled ornamental plants include annual bedding plants, herbaceous and woody perennials, flowering and foliage plants, woody plants and trees, bulbs, and bulb-like ornamentals.

Additional labeled uses include juvenile fruit and nut trees, vines, brambles, and bushberries grown in commercial ornamental nurseries and greenhouses; bearing citrus trees, nut trees, and grape vines in commercial and residential landscapes; commercial production of specified greenhouse-grown vegetables; and specified vegetable transplants grown for the home-consumer market. Sultan is not labeled for vegetable transplants intended for agricultural field production.

Target Pests

Listed Tetranychid Mites: Banks grass mite, brown almond mite, brown wheat mite, carmine spider mite, citrus red mite, European red mite, McDaniel spider mite, Pacific spider mite, spruce spider mite, strawberry spider mite, Texas citrus mite, twospotted spider mite, Willamette spider mite, and Yuma spider mite.

Life Stages Controlled: Sultan is highly active against eggs, nymphs or immature mites, and adults of listed tetranychid mite species.

Not Controlled: Sultan is not effective against broad mites, bulb mites, cyclamen mites, flat mites, or rust mites. Use another appropriately labeled miticide when these mite groups are the target pest.

Application Notes

For ornamental plants, apply Sultan at 13.7 fl oz per 100 gallons of water when mites first appear and before populations build to heavy pressure. Conventional applications generally use 100 gallons of finished spray per acre. Low-volume, high-pressure equipment may be used at a minimum of 20 gallons per acre only when thorough plant coverage can be achieved. Because Sultan is a contact miticide and is not systemic or translaminar, complete and uniform coverage of leaf surfaces is essential for reliable control.

Do not make more than one Sultan application before rotating to an effective miticide with a different mode of action. Do not make more than two applications per crop per year or crop growing cycle, do not apply at intervals shorter than 14 days, and do not exceed 27.4 fl oz per acre per year. Sultan is rainfast approximately 1 hour after application. Do not apply by air or chemigation. Sultan must not be tank mixed with insect growth regulators, plant growth regulators, carbamate insecticides, organophosphate insecticides, or pyrethroid insecticides.
