Explain Herbicide is a selective, systemic post-emergence herbicide for control of annual grass weeds and suppression of certain perennial grass weeds in established turfgrass, sod farms, commercial and residential turf, ornamentals, and rights-of-way. Powered by fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, Explain is absorbed through the foliage and moves systemically within emerged grassy weeds.

Explain is especially useful for post-emergent control of problem grasses such as crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, barnyardgrass, panicum, sprangletop, seedling Johnsongrass, sandbur, and Japanese stiltgrass. It also suppresses common bermudagrass and rhizome Johnsongrass where growth suppression is desired. Explain is the generic equivalent of Acclaim Extra Herbicide.

Labeled Use Sites

Explain Herbicide is labeled for post-emergence annual and perennial grass control in established turfgrass, sod farms, commercial turf, residential turf, ornamental areas, and rights-of-way. Turfgrass species listed on the label include annual bluegrass, creeping bentgrass where specifically directed, fine fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and zoysiagrass. It is also labeled for use around many established deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, flowering plants, wildflowers, and selected desirable native grasses.

Target Weeds

Explain controls annual grass weeds including barnyardgrass, foxtail species, goosegrass also called silver crabgrass, hairy crabgrass, Japanese stiltgrass, seedling Johnsongrass, large crabgrass, smooth crabgrass, panicum species, sandbur, and sprangletop. In rights-of-way uses, the label also lists shattercane, roughstalk bluegrass, and wild oats.

Explain temporarily suppresses common bermudagrass and rhizome Johnsongrass. Explain has little or no activity on broadleaf weeds or sedges, so tank mixes or sequential applications may be needed where broadleaf weeds or sedges are also present.

Application Notes

Apply Explain to young, actively growing grass weeds for best control. Explain only controls grasses that have emerged at the time of spraying, so repeat applications may be needed where new grass weed germination occurs or where dense weed populations prevent thorough coverage. Visual effects generally begin as yellowing or reddening of the leaf surface followed by weed death.

For turfgrass applications, use labeled rates based on grass weed growth stage. The label lists 3.5 to 39 fl oz per acre depending on weed size and turfgrass tolerance, with lower rates for very young grasses and higher rates for tillered weeds. Do not mow treated areas for at least 24 hours after application. Do not apply through irrigation systems, and do not apply to drought-stressed turf or ornamentals.
