Dithiopyr 2EW is a professional selective herbicide containing 24% dithiopyr for preemergence control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds plus early postemergence control of crabgrass. Its HRAC Group 3 chemistry provides dependable residual weed prevention in established lawns, golf turf, sports fields, sod farms, ornamental plantings, nurseries, Christmas tree farms, natural areas, and labeled non-crop sites.

As a generic alternative to Dimension 2EW, Dithiopyr 2EW delivers flexible application timing for crabgrass, annual bluegrass, goosegrass, foxtails, chickweed, spurge, dandelion, and many other labeled weeds. Most weeds must be treated before germination, while crabgrass can also be controlled during specific early postemergence growth stages according to region and application rate.

Labeled Use Sites

Dithiopyr 2EW is labeled for established lawns; commercial sod farms; ornamental and sports turf including athletic fields, golf course fairways, roughs, tee boxes, and unimproved turfgrass areas; container-grown, field-grown, and landscape ornamentals; Christmas tree farms; and natural or open-space areas including parks, campgrounds, trails, restoration sites, prairie management areas, wildlife openings, and wildlife habitat areas.

Non-crop uses include airports, cemeteries, rights-of-way, fencerows, gravel pits, hard-surface cracks, industrial sites, military lands, mining and drilling areas, non-irrigation ditch banks, gas and oil pads, parking lots, petroleum tank yards, pipelines, pump stations, railroads, roadsides, solar fields, storage areas, substations, vacant lots, and other labeled residential and commercial non-crop areas. Do not apply to golf course putting greens.

Target Weeds

Grassy Weeds: barley, barnyardgrass, annual bluegrass (Poa annua), brome, large crabgrass, smooth crabgrass, southern crabgrass, crowfootgrass, seedling dallisgrass, giant foxtail, green foxtail, yellow foxtail, goosegrass, kikuyugrass, Mary’s grass or Japanese stiltgrass, wild oats, annual and perennial ryegrass, sandbur, smutgrass, southwestern cupgrass.

Broadleaf Weeds: bittercress, carpetweed, chickweed, common dandelion, Carolina geranium, henbit, prostrate knotweed, common lespedeza, marestail, black medic, mulberry weed, mustard, buttercup oxalis, parsley-piert, redroot pigweed, pineappleweed, common purslane, London rocket, shepherdspurse, sowthistle, corn speedwell, garden spurge, prostrate spurge, spotted spurge, willowherb, creeping woodsorrel, and yellow woodsorrel.

With the exception of early postemergence crabgrass, these listed weeds must be treated before emergence. Dithiopyr 2EW does not control established grassy or broadleaf weeds after emergence.

Application Notes

For established turf, apply Dithiopyr 2EW at 1 to 2 pints per acre, equivalent to approximately 0.37 to 0.73 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft, as a single or sequential preemergence treatment. Sequential turf applications may be made at 5- to 10-week intervals based on weed pressure, desired residual control, turf height, environmental conditions, and previous performance. Do not exceed 2 pints per acre per application or 6 pints per acre per year.

For early postemergence crabgrass control, regional timing is important. In cool-season turf regions, apply before crabgrass tillering begins and while plants have fewer than 5 leaves. In western, southern, and transition regions dominated by warm-season turf, 2 pints per acre has demonstrated control through the 3- to 5-tiller stage. A nonionic surfactant at a minimum of 0.25% v/v is recommended to improve postemergence activity past the 5-leaf stage. For preemergence activation, provide at least 0.5 inch of rainfall or irrigation; when targeting emerged crabgrass, delay irrigation for 6 hours after application.
