Clethodim 2E Selective Postemergence Herbicide

Clethodim 2E is a professional selective systemic postemergence herbicide containing 26.4% clethodim for control of labeled annual and perennial grasses in agricultural crops, ornamentals, nurseries, conifers, Christmas tree farms, fallow land, and non-crop areas. Its HRAC Group 1 ACCase-inhibiting mode of action stops susceptible grass growth while translocating from treated foliage to growing points in leaves, shoots, and roots.

Manufactured by Albaugh, Clethodim 2E provides flexible grass-control programs against crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtails, annual bluegrass, volunteer corn and cereals, Johnsongrass, bermudagrass, quackgrass, tall fescue, bentgrass, and many other labeled annual and perennial grasses. Initial loss of vigor is followed by chlorosis and necrosis of young plant tissue, with visible symptoms generally appearing within 7 to 14 days depending on species and environmental conditions.

Labeled Use Sites

Clethodim 2E is labeled across a broad range of agricultural crops including established and seedling alfalfa, artichoke, asparagus, dry and succulent beans and peas, lentils, garden beets, low-growing berries, bushberries, caneberries, brassica vegetables, leafy greens, canola where permitted, carrots, clover in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, cotton, cranberry, cucurbits, flax where permitted, fruiting vegetables, herbs, hops, leafy vegetables, mustard seed, okra, onions, garlic, shallots, peanuts where permitted, peppermint, spearmint, pome fruit, potatoes, radishes, root vegetables, safflower, sesame, soybeans, stevia, stone fruit, strawberries, sugar beets, sunflower, tomatoes, tree nuts, tuberous and corm vegetables, turnip greens, and watercress where permitted.

Additional labeled sites include non-bearing fruit and nut crops, newly transplanted and established non-grassy ornamentals, greenhouses, lathhouses, shadehouses, outdoor nurseries, parks, roadside plantings, structural landscapes, Christmas tree farms, conifer nurseries and plantations, fallow land, and non-crop areas such as rights-of-way, highways, railroads, pipelines, utility lines, pumping stations, substations, airports, manufacturing plants, storage yards, rail yards, fence lines, parkways, post-harvest cropland, and areas beneath greenhouse benches and around golf courses. Clethodim 2E must not contact desirable turfgrass or other desirable grass crops unless the grass itself is the intended target.

Target Weeds

Annual Grasses: barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, California brome, cheatgrass, downy brome, ripgut brome, canarygrass, hairy crabgrass, large crabgrass, smooth crabgrass, southern crabgrass, crowfootgrass, fall panicum, field sandbur, giant foxtail, green foxtail, yellow foxtail, goosegrass, itchgrass, junglerice, lovegrass or stinkgrass, rabbitsfootgrass, red rice, Hardy ryegrass, Italian ryegrass, seedling Johnsongrass, shattercane, southwestern cupgrass, Amazon sprangletop, bearded sprangletop, Mexican sprangletop, red sprangletop, Texas panicum, volunteer barley, volunteer oats, volunteer rye, volunteer wheat, volunteer corn, volunteer grain sorghum, wild oats, wild proso millet, witchgrass, and woolly cupgrass.

Annual Bluegrass: Poa annua is labeled for postemergence control through the specified early growth stages. More mature annual bluegrass may require the higher labeled rate.

Perennial Grasses: bermudagrass, tall fescue, foxtail barley, orchardgrass, quackgrass, rhizome Johnsongrass, wirestem muhly, roughstalk bluegrass (Poa trivialis), Kentucky bluegrass, and bentgrass.

Special Grass Programs: Clethodim 2E also has labeled programs for glyphosate-, glufosinate-, and imidazolinone-resistant volunteer corn, glyphosate-resistant field corn burndown prior to replanting, tall fescue control or suppression in native warm-season grass restoration programs, and tall fescue seedhead suppression in non-producing agricultural areas. Sethoxydim-resistant volunteer corn is labeled for suppression only at the specified rate.

Clethodim 2E controls grasses only. It does not control sedges or broadleaf weeds.

Application Notes

Apply Clethodim 2E postemergence to actively growing grasses at the labeled growth stage. Standard annual-grass programs commonly use 6 to 8 fl oz per acre, while perennial-grass programs commonly use 8 to 16 fl oz per acre; however, rates vary by crop, target species, growth stage, and special-use program, so the crop-specific label directions must always be followed. Ground applications generally use 5 to 40 gallons of spray solution per acre, with at least 10 gallons per acre required under heavy grass pressure, perennial grass treatments, volunteer corn control, drought or stress conditions, certain tank mixes, or dense crop canopies.

Adjuvant requirements vary substantially by crop and use pattern. Many uses permit or require a nonionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v, crop oil concentrate, or in certain programs methylated seed oil. Ornamentals specifically require an NIS containing at least 80% active ingredient at 0.25% v/v, and crop oil concentrate is not advised because it may injure flowers or foliage. Do not apply if rain is expected within one hour. Avoid applications to drought-, temperature-, or moisture-stressed grasses, and do not apply to grasses beyond the labeled growth stage.
